Battle for the Sun sees Viktor & Rolf designers Viktor Horsting and Rolf Snoeren compelled to “create a collection to fight for creativity and beauty”.

Inspired by the symbolic dress of Medieval crusaders and knights, the show started in theme by a wooden drawbridge creaking open to reveal a giant blood red V&R logo with the first model silhouetted against it in black. Limited to red, black, ecru and metallic greys, the pieces formed powerful structured shapes; the designers wanting them to look like ‘modern armour’.

The collection’s Battle for the Sun title is taken from the name of the 6th album by UK alternative rock band Placebo and its booming dramatic tones played as the models strode down the runway. The models’ faces were painted blood red, as if they were going into a death-or-glory battle. Sharp stiffened silhouettes in heavy felted wool, sculptured leather and bonded tailoring fabrics emphasized strong curved shoulder lines, tiny waists and high collars. The perfect symmetry of the designs, the pleats and circular fan-like motifs, recalled the early Gothic carved tombs of Medieval queens.

The crusader’s red cross is inserted into a slash-neck black tunic, complete with red rose emblems either side; a look that is softened into a less literal interpretation by asymmetric draped inserts in black on red, or even as flashes of red on a military belt. The hard-edged fabrics are given light and shade through the addition of textured materials, such as a fur jacket with quilted PVC sleeves.

The red rose motif also appears cleverly knitted into a long-sleeve roll-neck above-the-knee dress in stark black and ecru. Further into the catwalk show, eveningwear pieces in metallic silver jersey appeared, complete with the same pinwheel shoulder details, dramatic corrugated layered pleats and shoulder fins, reminiscent of jousting armour from the Middle Ages.

Footwear ranged from glossy black high-heel calfskin boots complete with military buttons down the side to red suede and glossy black patent leather ankle boots with deep cleavage through to silver-finned strappy sandals. Finishing touches included bright red woollen gloves and large patent leather belts, city bags and clutches; all sporting the graphic signature V&R bow.
